What to Say in a New Baby Video (They’ll Watch It at Eighteen)

Published August 19, 2026

A new baby video is the only group film with two audiences on two schedules: the shattered, happy parents who will watch it this month, and the child who may watch it at eight, or eighteen, looking for the people who were waiting for them. The best clips serve both with two sentences each.

Introduce yourself. Really

“Hi, I’m your aunt Priya, your mum’s little sister” feels absurd to say to a newborn and lands like treasure eighteen years later, especially for the voices that may not be around by then. The film’s future viewer has never met anyone in it: give them the map.

One line for now, one for later

The two-audience structure, in practice:

  • For the parents: “You two are going to be so good at this, and we’re bringing dinner Thursday.”
  • For the future kid: “When you watch this someday: you were so wanted, and your dad cried more than your mum.”
  • A prediction to age well: “I’m guessing you got your grandmother’s stubbornness. Report back in 2044.”
  • A promise: “I’m the one who’ll teach you to fish. It’s booked.”

For the parents’ clip-worthy truth

Skip the advice avalanche: sleep-training opinions age badly on camera and were not requested. What lands is witness and welcome: “we saw the photo and shouted”, “this family got bigger and better today”. If you must give one piece of advice, make it “call me at 3am, I mean it”.

Grandparents: say the long things

The oldest voices carry the most freight to the future viewer. A grandparent saying “you come from people who crossed an ocean with nothing” or simply telling the new parent “I’m proud of you” records something no one else in the film can. If you are helping a grandparent record, prompt them with “tell the baby where this family comes from.”

Questions people ask

What do you say in a video message for a new baby?

Introduce yourself properly, because the person watching may be eighteen by the time they do. Then one line for the parents now and one line for the child later.

Why record something the baby will see years later?

Because it is the only chance to put the voices of this moment on record. Grandparents in particular should say the long things, the family history and the names, while they are the ones who can.

What helps the parents in the first weeks?

One clip-worthy truth rather than advice. The thing nobody told you, said kindly, lands better than a tip, and parents in week two are not short of tips.
