What to Say in a Wedding Video Message (When You’re Not the Best Man)

Published August 19, 2026

Wedding video messages stall for a specific reason: everyone has heard toasts, so everyone thinks they owe one. You don’t. The couple is not grading rhetoric; they are collecting faces and warmth from their people on the biggest day they’ll ever host. A cousin being genuinely glad beats a stranger being clever, every time, in every film.

Three shapes that always work

Pick the one that fits how you know them:

  • The observer: “I’ve watched you two together since the beginning, and what I always notice is…”
  • The welcomer: “We haven’t known you long, but the way you look at them told us everything.”
  • The well-wisher: “Here’s the thing I hope for you two more than anything…”

If you know one of them well

Tell the other one a secret. “What you should know about marrying her is…” followed by something warm and true is the single most rewatched species of wedding clip: it welcomes the new spouse into the inner circle on camera.

If you barely know them

Plus-ones and new coworkers freeze hardest, and needlessly. Say who you are, say what you saw: “I sat behind you at the ceremony and I’ve never seen two people so sure.” Witness beats history when history is short.

Skip these

The toast clichés that eat seconds and add nothing:

  • Marriage advice from your own divorce, or anyone’s.
  • “Finally!” and anything else that ribs the timeline.
  • Inside jokes with no outside: one sentence of setup or save it for the party.
  • Apologising for your recording: nobody sees the mess behind you, they see you.

Length and tone

Twenty to forty-five seconds. Record it like you’d say it across a table at the reception, one take, glass optionally in hand. If it makes you smile while you say it, it will make them cry when they watch it. That is the entire trick.
