How Long Should a Video Message Be? Shorter Than You Think

Published August 19, 2026

Ask people to record a video message and the first thing they want to know is how long it should be. The honest answer surprises them: thirty to sixty seconds, and the shorter end of that is usually better. Not because anyone is rationing warmth, but because of what the finished film is like to watch.

Think of the film, not the clip

A group film is fifteen or twenty voices in a row. Fifteen crisp half-minutes make a twelve-minute film that people rewatch. Fifteen three-minute reflections make a forty-five minute sit that gets sampled once. Your clip is a note in a song; short notes keep the song moving.

Lengths by occasion

Rules of thumb that hold up:

  • Birthdays and congratulations: 20–45 seconds. Energy over essay.
  • Farewells and retirements: 30–60 seconds. One story, one wish.
  • Get well and encouragement: 15–45 seconds. Built for replay; short is kind.
  • Memorials: up to 90 seconds. Stories need room, and this is the occasion to break the rule.

One take beats five

The clip you record in one imperfect take, with the dog in the background and a laugh in the middle, is warmer than the one you perfect on attempt five. Polish removes the exact thing these films exist to capture. If you flubbed a word but meant the sentence, send it.

When longer is right

Break the rule when you are the one with the story everyone hopes is in the film: the best friend at the wedding, the daughter at the retirement, the person who knew them longest at a memorial. One or two longer anchors give a film its spine. If that is you, take your ninety seconds, and land on one sentence you want them to keep.

Questions people ask

How long should one video message be?

Around thirty seconds for most occasions, and up to a minute if you are telling one story. The number that matters is not the clip, it is the finished film: twenty people at a minute each is a twenty minute video nobody watches twice.

Does a longer message mean a better one?

No, and it usually means an unedited one. The messages people rewatch are the ones that say a specific thing and stop, and that is nearly always shorter than the person recording expects.

When is a longer clip the right call?

When the speaker is the closest person to the occasion, or is telling the story the whole film is built around. One long clip among twenty short ones reads as deliberate; twenty long ones read as nobody being asked.
