How to Make an Employee Recognition Video Your Whole Team Can Join
Recognition from a manager is expected. Recognition from a dozen teammates — unprompted specifics about a moment someone came through — is the kind that actually gets remembered. The hard part has always been getting a distributed team into the same room at the same time. You don’t need to anymore.
1. Drop the link where the team already is
Slack, Teams, whatever your team lives in day-to-day — post the link there rather than sending a separate email people have to remember to act on. The easier it is to find in the moment, the more of the team actually contributes.
2. Ask for a moment, not a compliment
"They’re great" is generic. A specific prompt gets you something the person being celebrated will actually remember:
- What’s one thing you appreciate about them?
- What will you miss most about working together?
- Welcome them to the team — what should they know?
- Share a moment they really came through.
3. Give time zones a real chance
A few days of lead time matters more for distributed teams than any other kind of collection on this list — it’s the only way someone nine hours off doesn’t get left out entirely.
4. Have a leader go first
A message from leadership sitting alongside peer messages — not instead of them — signals that this is genuinely valued, not just a team-lead box to tick.
5. Play it live, and keep a copy
Save it for the all-hands or the person’s last day, then download a copy for them and one for the team archive. It’s the kind of thing that gets pulled back up months later.
